Stormont First Minister Michelle O'Neill has apologised for attending the funeral of a veteran republican at the height of the pandemic in Northern Ireland.

Ms O'Neill was giving evidence to the UK Covid Inquiry in Belfast.

In June 2020, she and other members of the party leadership went to the funeral of veteran republican Bobby Storey. The Sinn Féin leadership attended the event, which saw thousands of mourners line the route.

Ms O'Neill was closely questioned about her attendance at the funeral during her evidence this morning.

"I know my actions compounded the hurt and that horrible experience that those families have gone through. I know my actions angered families and for that I'm truly sorry.

"I'm sorry for going and I'm sorry for the hurt that has been caused after that and I want to make that statement very clear on the record again today."
