Tánaiste Micheál Martin has told the Dáil that he is "very much aware" of threats being made against campaigning politicans, some of which are "shocking".

"Some of the cases are shocking," Mr Martin said, adding that the "very negative, misogynistic focus is a worry for women who wish to get into politics; this is a significant deterrent in itself".

"We do need to address it, collectively, in the house," he added, and urged that supports be provided for public representatives, particularly for their homes.

But Mr Martin noted that "the vast, vast majority of people are courteous, warm and hospitable".
